Walk Ride PW is a campaigning and lobby group for Active Travel.
We want Prestwich and Whitefield to be places where people have high quality, safe, walking and cycling routes that they are happy to use. We see our role as being proactive and constructive, engaging other local groups in Prestwich and Whitefield, Bury Council, the Bury Walking and Cycling Forum, Transport for Greater Manchester and with politicians of all colours to provide informed local opinion on improvements to make and schemes to progress. If you want to be involved please contact us by email: wrpw [at] walkridegm.org.uk
We are affiliated to the wider Walk Ride Greater Manchester group and support TfGM's and Mayor Andy Burnham's ambitions for the Bee Network of walking and cycling routes ‘safe enough for a 12 year-old to use’ and ‘a network that would make him choose it over driving’. Details of some of our campaigns are below, more information on the Campaigns menu tab. Check our our facebook page, our X (formerly known as Twitter) feed, and the News tab to find out more about our activities. |
November 2023 update
Dr Bike FREE BIKE Repairs! And now training sessions! On various Saturdays and Sundays over the last months Martin from WRPW has been running Dr Bike Sessions outside Village Greens and at The Phoenix Centre in St Mary's Park repairing and maintaining bikes for free using grant funding we secured. He is now expanding this to a series of teach-ins, the first one is about puncture repair and is at The Phoenix Centre on 6th December between 6.30 and 8.30pm. If you want to know when the next Dr Bike repairs sessions are please keep an eye on our facebook page and X feed. Book a repair slot at any of the repair sessions by emailing [email protected] or take pot luck and just turn up on the day. Do you want to help Walk Ride Prestwich and Whitefield (WRPW)? WRPW is looking to increase the number of 'activists', i.e. the people who engage with organisations and similar groups, do our social media, liaise with residents etc. We can make a bigger impact if we can increase the number of people who can spare a small amount of time and be actively involved in WRPW activities. If you are interested come and meet some of us at our free drop-in Dr Bike 'Learn to fix your bike' session at the Phoenix Centre on 6th December between 6.30 and 8.30pm. We do this by engaging with Bury Council, big projects like the Longfield regeneration and the M60 Simister Interchange planners, and with like-minded groups around Greater Manchester. We have also secured funding to run successful Dr Bike free repair and maintenance pop-ups sessions, and we run social media accounts and our website (https://walkridepw.weebly.com/). Prestwich Regeneration Consultation Bury Council and developers Muse have big plans to replace the Longfield Centre in the middle of Prestwich. More details of the regeneration project can be found at yourprestwich.com/. WRPW have been involved in some the consultations and we sent through our thoughts to the initial consultation in March 2023. You can download the submission using the link below. Overall we think the regeneration is a good thing for Prestwich and are pleased to see walking and cycling (including secure cycle parking) being taken seriously by Muse. We are keen that Bury Council take on board the bigger picture and that ensuring safe and secure walking and cycling routes to the development are delivered part of the overall package. Our submission to the March 2023 consultation round can be downloaded using the link below. We are pleased to see that the second round consultation proposals have taken on some of the ideas put forward.
Bury Council Draft Transport Strategy to 2040 Bury Council have published a draft Transport Strategy to 2040, you can download it here: www.bury.gov.uk/planning-building-control/regeneration/transport-strategy/strategy-and-summary. Section 7 is their Walking, Wheeling and Cycling Strategy www.bury.gov.uk/asset-library/chapter-7-walking-wheeling-and-cycling.pdf. In June 2023 WRPW responded to the consultation on the strategy (download link below). We are broadly supportive and concluded that it "is a unique opportunity to create a Bury that we want to enjoy for years to come, that works for and appeals to future generations and that avoids the mistakes of the past. We know what needs to be done to achieve that – prioritise people over cars – so please let’s get it right."

Heaton Park Active Travel NeighbourhoodBury Council are consulting on an Active Travel Neighbourhood in the streets near Heaton Park. Designed well it will offer a cost-effective way of delivering safe and attractive streets for walking and cycling by preventing through traffic from using residential neighbourhoods to avoid main roads (often known as 'rat running'), while retaining local access for residents and visitors. WRPW supports the Active Neighbourhood and encourages local residents to contribute to the consultation so that it will work for them.

Unsworth-Simister-Heaton Park walking and cycling route?Highways England plan to remodel the M60 roundabout at Simister. We want them to use some of their 'Designated Funds' money to pave and light footpaths and cycleways on existing muddy paths from Unsworth to Heaton Park.

Better Cycle Parking!Better cycle parking is a must if people are to cycle more.
In the coming months we will be campaigning for more and improved parking and calling out poor existing facilities. |
